We've got the humble carob growing on our doorstep yet we only seem to remember it on Green Mondays !

For readers who live abroad... it is traditional on Green Mondays to go out into the fields and eat mostly bread, fresh, raw vegetables, savoury tahini,(sesame paste)  and a sweet dip made with tahini and carob syrup.

Reasons:

  1. Anti-diarrhetic:  it is an ideal substitute to oral re-hydration solution in the treatment of diarrhoea.
  2. Rich in calcium: Strengthens bones, teeth, aids in combating and reversing osteoporosis.
  3. High In Protein: Contains 80% protein.  Brilliant for children, active and athletic people.
  4. Reduces Stress & anxiety.
  5. Liver and Colon  Cancer  Preventative:  Contains anti-proliferative agents which were shown to inhibit liver cancer in             mice. Carob fiber was shown to inhibit the growth of human colon cancer cells.
  6. Cancer preventative:  The leaves contain compounds which prevent the development of cancer.

Carob also has excellent nutritional value. It contains magnesium, calcium, iron, phosphorous, potassium, manganese, barium, copper, nickel and the vitamins A, B, B2, B3, and D.

Spicy Carob Smoothie

1 banana

1 tbsp carob powder

1 date

1 cups rice milk or almond milk or water

(optional 1/4 tsp powdered cinnamon, nutmeg, pinch of cloves)

Blend and enjoy !

Carob powder may be found at most health food shops.

If you use carob syrup, not more than 1 tbsp a day as it is high in sugar.
