Ancient Greek physicians, including Hippocrates, were using it for common cold and the flu. In ancient Rome, Anise was used in making an Anise cake that was eaten after their big feasts as an aid for digestion. Historically, Anise was used quite commonly for flatulence, colic and nausea because of its pleasant flavour. The herb was also known in ancient China where it was used for indigestion, flatulence and as a breath freshener. Anise is used in the treatment of indigestion, flatulence, intestinal colic, asthma, cough, stomach pain and toothache. External use: anise essential oil can be used against scabbies and lice. Stimulant: Anise has been found to stimulate the function of the heart, the lungs, the liver and even the brain. Children: Anise tea is very effective against children intestine colic and also infantile catarrah or cold. Woman: It's seeds are a galactogogue and will increase the production of milk in nursing women while, on the other hand, it is sometimes used to relieve women from menopausal discomforts. Men: Anise has been used lately for the treatment of some forms of prostate cancer. Other Uses. In case of toothache, put a few (3 - 4) drops of anise essential oil in a cup of water and gargle. Warnings ! Do not take anise during pregnancy and also if your doctor has prohibited the use of birth control pills due to anise having some estrogen activity.
